The Last One

I found it only appropriate to do my last post about the last scene of the Friends series.

In this clip the friends say goodbye as their lives take them separate directions.

  • Emotions- All the friends are sad because their lives are changing and they won't be hanging out together everyday. They had ten great years together and with things changing it is always difficult.
  • Personalities- Chandler's personality really shows in this clip. It's a sad moment and Chandler, the comedic, makes jokes to lighten the mood and to keep him from getting too emotional.
  • Intelligence- Joey's slow mental processing is also shown in this scene because he realizes for the first time that the apartment is painted purple. He even lived in the apartment for awhile.
  • Memories- as they look around the apartment for the last time their hippocampus digs out of the memories that they have had there and together.
  • Perception- All of the friends perceive the apartment as smaller than it usually looks. This is probably because they are sad and the room is empty, they are thinking about how much they are going to miss the apartment and their time together. Also, with the emotion of being sad about things changing their world seems to be closing in on them.

Personal Reflection

I just wanted to reflect on the class and this activity.

First, I wish the class wasn't at 8am because I'm not quite awake and I wish i would be. The things I have enjoyed about this class is not having a ton of work to do. Knowing the format of tests ahead of time and the review sheets really help because it helps me study effectively for the test. I like that it isn't always a stand and deliver type class. I enjoy working with a group and having discussions as well as doing activities in class that apply to what we are learning. Like the conditioning day, I really understood the  lesson, it made me pay really close attention to what was being said because I was waiting for the word "conditioning" so I could eat some more of my Pixy Stick sugar. I can't believe I was actually salivating, I was even drinking water, I also couldn't believe I was the only one, must have a sweet tooth.

Doing this reflection journal activity was actually pretty fun and helped me understand ideas we talked about in class. It was fun because I was able to watch clips from Friends and have a valid reason to. It was also I really good feeling to be able to apply a concept learned in close to the show because it made me feel pretty smart and it helped me understand the material. When I was studying for tests and certain questions on the test I referred to my blog posts and used them to help me study. I found out that not all my interpretations of the content was correct on here, but I eventually figured out that my explanations weren't entirely accurate but I tried my best to apply the material. I that doing these journal response is an effective form of learning and understanding plus it's nice that we can be creative with it because it sort of makes learning fun.

Overall I've enjoyed this class. It has challenged me and it interests me. I see a lot of connections with this class and my education class. Understanding child behavior will be really important in my career and I like that this class applies to my major. Plus we have a super sweet professor :)

Rachel's Emotional Response

In the following clip Rachel and Ross accidentally lock Emma inside of their apartment.
Waiting to Get Inside of the Apartment
Rachel Freaking Out

According to the James-Lange Theory which claims that a person has the perception of the stimulus and then they experience arousal and after that they feel the emotion.

  • With this theory, First rachel realizes that the door is locked and Emma is inside alone. Then her heart starts to race and panic rises and then she starts to feel scared and worried.
According to the Cannon-Bard Theory, which disagrees with the James-Lange theory, says that a person has the perception os the stimulus and then the arousal and feeling of the emotion happen at the same time.

  • With this theory, Rachel realizes Emma is locked inside and her heart starts racing as she becomes scared and worried.
If I was a psychologist I would disagree with both of these statements, I think we experience the emotion and then the arousal occurs. I think the arousal plays off of the emotion. I know when someone jumps out at me I get scared right away and after i realize what going on I realize that my heart stopped for a second and then starts to race.

Personalities Based on "Friends" Parents

In class we discussed how personalities can be based on the environment in which people grow up in, currently live in, and the people they are surrounded by. I believe that some of the Friends characters have certain personality traits because of their parents. Either how their parents treated them or how they influenced them growing up or currently.

  • Monica- I believe that Monica is a "neat freak" because of her mother. Monica's mom seems to not think very much of Monica and critics everything she does. That is why I believe she has a need to make sure everything is always clean and organized so it's one last thing that her mother can judge her on.
  • Ross- I believe Ross has to be right about everything because growing up he was used to his parents praise. Ross was the favorite child, Monica was not, so he was used to getting his way. His parents always told him he was right and that he was the best, so he expects that from others. If they don't believe him, he gets paranoid and won't drop it until he proves he is correct.
  • Rachel- I believe that rachel is needy because her parents spoiled her as a child. She comes from a wealthy family where everything was handed to her and she didn't have to work for anything. Now that she is on her own she still seems spoiled and expects to get what she wants and tries to get people to feel sorry for her if she doesn't.
  • Chandler- I believe Chandler is humorous because he is very insecure. His dad is gay and is a drag queen in Las Vegas and when Chandler was growing up his father had him give him facials and pluck his eyebrows, etc. These things make Chandler feel feminine and people always say that there is a gay-like quality about him and he uses humor to mask the lack of self-confidence.
  • Phoebe- I believe Phoebe is strange because she didn't have parent figures growing up. Phoebe lived on the streets through her teen years, which makes her aggressive at times. Also, she believes in weird things because she picked up those ideas of the streets. The lack of parents also gives Phoebe a freeness because she was on your own and didn't have to live by other's rules.
  • Joey- I believe Joey is caring and kind because he grew up in a large family. Joey is the only son of this parents and has several sisters, this makes him non-agressive and kind because he didn't have a brother to fight with and has sisters that he knows are moody and knows how to be kind to women.

Chandler's Defense Mechanism

When Chandler kisses Joey's girlfriend. He feels awful about and as a result he will do anything for Joey and be the best, best friend. This portrays the defense mechanism, reaction formation.

Reaction Formation is psychoanalytic defense mechanism by which the ego unconsciously switches unacceptable impulses into opposites. Thus, people may express feelings that are opposite of the anxiety- arousing unconscious feelings. "I hate him" becomes "I love him." Timidity becomes daring. Feelings of inadequacy become bravado.

Chandler shows this because what he did was betray his friend. His conscious feels really bad about it so it decides to do the opposite and start doing really friendly things.

The clip below shows when Chandler tells Joey the truth and this shows that Chandler does not use the defense mechanism, denial. Because he wants to be a good friend and always remember what he did was wrong. Chandler Confesses

Denial is when a person refuses to believe or even to perceive painful realities.

Interpreting Rachel's Dream

One method that Freud used to analyze the unconscious mind was through interpreting manifest and latent contents of dreams.

Manifest is readily perceived by the eye or the understanding; evident;obvious; apparent;plain.
Latent is present but not visible, apparent, or actualized; existing as potential.

The clip below shows a dream that Rachel had about Joey.

Rachel's Dream About Joey

I believe that Freud would look at this dream and use it to analyze Rachel's unconscious mind. He would probably say that Rachel is in love with Joey based on this dream, The manifest would be that she wants to kiss him because she wanted to in her dream. The latent content would be that Rachel is in love with Joey. It's not obvious in the scene of the dream but maybe thats what's driving her passion to kiss him.

The other idea is that Rachel is in love and wants to kiss Joey's soap character. Rachel Watching Joey's Scene this clip shows what she did that day and what could have lead her to the dream. Either watching the scene made her attracted to Joey's character or to Joey himself. We find out later in the series that it is Joey she's attracted to.

Monica's Personality

Personality is an individual’s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting.

Monica has very strong personality traits. Below I'm going to analyze her personality.

  • Cleanliness- Monica is known as a "Neat Freak." She is obsessive about her apartment and loves cleaning it. Examples:
    • She describes the dry cleaners as her Disneyland.
    • She categorizes towels into 11 sections.
    • She cleans her cleaning supplies.
    • Monica's Cleanliness (clip)
  • Competitiveness- Monica is highly competitive and usually takes her competitiveness too far and too rough. Examples:
    • Monica breaks Ross's nose in football.
    • She got angry during Pictionary and threw a plate.
    • She plays Mike in ping pong for several hours trying to beat him.
    • Monica's Will to Win (clip)
  • Bossiness- Monica is known by all her friends as bossy. Especially when you get in her way of something she wants (going back to being competitive). Examples:
    • She insists on working in military time while planning Phoebe's wedding.
    • She always bosses Chandler around and tells him what to do.
    • She knows that Rachel is a push over and bosses her around some.
    • Monica Bossing Chandler (clip)

"Friends" Personality Test

What "Friends" Character are You?

TBS has a quiz that determines which Friends character you are most like based on your personality. Follow the link above to take the quiz.

They questions asked in the quiz is as followed with my response:

  1. What's your favorite food? Pizza
  2. What is your favorite recreational activity? Watching TV
  3.  How would you describe your job? Entertainment
  4. What's your favorite type of music? New-Age
  5. What's your dominate personality trait? Logical Nature
  6. How would you describe your family? Close
  7. What's your love life like? Frustrating
  8. What's your favorite animal? Chick
  9. What song best describes you? Express Yourself
  10. How would your friends describe you? Funny
  11. What's your favorite type of movie? Drama
  12. What's your favorite sport? Basketball
  13. If you were a mobster, what would your nickname be? Big Tony
  14. What's your favorite era? The Nineties
  15. Who would you most like to meet? A Famous Actor
My results:

You are most like: CHANDLER

How sure are we? BARELY

Like Chandler, you consider yourself the only "normal" member of your social group. And considering how strange your parents were, that's quite an achievement. Always keeping a sense of humor, your intelligence shows in your quick retorts and use of sarcasm. Despite your hard shell, however, you have surprising depths of emotion and sympathy, proving to be an excellent friend.

Not sure if it's all entirely true but close!

Gardner's Eight Intelligences

Howard Gardner views intelligence as multiple abilities that come in packages.

  • Savant Syndrome- is a condition in which a person otherwise limited in mental ability has an exceptional specific skill, such as in computation of drawing.
  • Gardner's Eight Intelligences- Logical/Mathematical, Verbal/Linguistics, Interpersonal Skills, Intrapersonal Skills, Musical, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Visual/ Spatial, Naturalistic, Existential.
If the Friends characters had savant syndrome they would fall into this category of the eight intelligences:

  • Joey- Intrapersonal Skills, because he is an actor and they are supposed to excel in this intelligence.
  • Phoebe- Musical, because she is a musician and they are supposed to excel in the level.
  • Rachel- Visual/Spatial, because she is into fashion and this level contains artists and fashion is a type of art.
  • Ross- Existential, because he is into history and coming up with new philosophies and this level is dominated by philosophers.
  • Chandler- Logical/Mathematical, because his first career was in data processing and this level is excelled by engineers and careers with math.
  • Monica- Visual/Spatial, because cooking is a form of art.

Joey Memorizing Lines

Memory is the persistence of learning over time through the storage and retrieval of information.

  • Encoding is the processing of information into the memory system. For example, by extracting the meaning.

  • Storage is the retention of encoded information over time.

  • Retrieval is the process of getting information out of memory storage.
In Friends, Joey is an actor and has to memorize lines for auditions and roles. In this clip (Joey Learning Bamboozle) Joey is auditioning for a job as a game show host for a new show called Bamboozle. In order to understand the game and to remember the rules for his audition he asks Ross and Chandler to to help him. The play the role of the contestant and Joey is the host, they are putting the script into a real life situation to help Joey.

While this is happen the information is being encoded into Joey's memory and placed into storage. When Joey gets to his audition he will have to retrieve the information from the memory storage.

There are three levels of comprehension:

  • Behavioral- lower level processing, basic ABC's
  • Cognitive- higher level processing, math and science
  • Constructive- highest level of processing, abstract problem solving
I believe that Joey demonstrates a level of comprehension of behavioral at least when it comes to school related things and common sense things. He struggles with math and any concept of science. His common sense is also very shaking.

Examples:
Joey's Card Trick

Joey's 3D glasses

Joey's hiding place

Non-"Friends" Post about Positive Reinforcement

Part of Skinner's Operant Conditioning Theory includes reinforcement and punishment.

Positive Reinforcement is getting something good
Negative Reinforcement is taking away something bad
Positive Punishment is getting something bad
Negative Punishment taking away something good

I noticed with myself that I use positive reinforcement in order to get homework done. An example is that right now I can only make popcorn if I finish two more entries. Let's just say I'm very focused right now. I believe that Skinner's form on conditioning is very effective. I also know if I don't do this assignment I'll receive negative punishment which would be taking away my good grade and positive punishment which would be receiving a bad grade.

Senses "Friends" Characters Couldn't Live Without

Sensation is detecting stimulus from the environment, an example is feeling something or using our senses to understand.

The five senses that we use are touch, smell, taste, sound, and vision. Below I have listed the senses that I think each Friends character would struggle without having the able to use, more than their other senses.

  1. Joey- Taste
    • Joey would be taste because he loves to eat. His whole day revolves around when he is going to eat and when he goes on dates they always go to dinner because, well, he needs to eat. If Joey didn't have taste his daily routine would be completely different.
  2. Monica- Taste
    • Monica would also be taste because she is a chef. If Monica couldn't taste she would probably be in a different profession. Also, if Monica couldn't taste her childhood would have been completely different because Monica was very obese as a child. She wouldn't have had an over eating probably if she couldn't taste and wasn't addicted to food.
  3. Phoebe- Sound
    • Phoebe would be sound because she is a musician. She isn't a very good one put hearing herself sing and being able to share her music, makes her really happy. Not being able to hear she wouldn't have that satisfaction that she gets from playing music.
  4. Rachel- Vision
    • Rachel would be vision because she is a fashionista. She is so in to fashion that if she didn't have sight she would have a different job and hobby. Fashion is her life, it's the one thing she is good at that someone can make a career out of.
  5. Ross- Vision
    • Ross would also be vision because he is a historian and wouldn't be able to read. He is also always writing thesis's and without sight he would struggle with that plus who knows how many more wives he would have had if he couldn't see what they looked like.
  6. Chandler- Sound
    • Chandler would be sound because of his sense of humor. He lives to tell jokes and make fun of people. If you couldn't hear he wouldn't be able to comment on a situation and put his two cents in. Chandler says that jokes is the one thing he has to get women and if he couldn't tell jokes he wouldn't have any self esteem.

Chandler and Automatic Negative Thought

Cognitive-behavior therapy is a popular integrative therapy that combines cognitive therapy (changing self-defeating thinking) with behavior therapy (changing behavior). In lame-mans terms, they can train you to think about things in a new way.

Automatic negative thought is when people think bad thoughts about themselves. With cognitive- behavior therapy they would try to retrain your thoughts.

Chandler's Technique to Quit Smoking

In the clip above Chandler uses an audio tape to help him stop smoking. He smokes because he gets stressed and doesn't think very highly of himself. The tape helps him think more positively and helps him to quit smoking. This is a form of cognitive- behavior therapy because it gets him to change his self defeating thinking and to change his behavior.

Joey Uses Operant Conditioning Punishment on Chandler

Operant conditioning is a type of learning in which behavior is strengthened if followed by reinforcer or diminished by a punisher. This theory was founded by B.F. Skinner.

Learning is a relatively permanent change in an organism's behavior due to experience.

Punishment is an event that decreases the behavior that follows it.

All of the terms above have to do with the following Friends clip: Chandler in the Box

Chandler kisses Joey's current girlfriend and joey decides to punish him by making him sit in a box for 3 hours. So he can think about what he did, to show how much Joey's friendship means to him, and because it is physically painful. Joey wants Chandler to learn that you shouldn't mess with your friends girlfriend.

This would be a positive form of punishment because Joey is giving Chandler something bad, making him sit in a box.

*Definitions from book.

Phoebe's Perceptual Tattoo

Phoebe's Tattoo

It's a little bit of a stretch but in this clip Phoebe gets a tattoo. She says it's of the earth when you are looking at from a great distance, but everyone else says it's just a dot on ink.

Perception is the process of organizing and interpreting sensory information, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events.

We talked in class about how perception is subjective. In class we looked at different images that showed multiple images and people usually saw one image or the other and not both until we were told what else was present in the picture.

Phoebe sees the earth but everyone else sees a dot. Now she is just trying to make it seem like she did get a tattoo and didn't chicken out but This clip does remind me of they images we saw in class.

Ross's Belief Perseverance on Evolution

I'm using the same clip from a previous post because it applies to many ideas. The following clips are when Ross and Phoebe argue about evolution. Before I talked about Ross and Phoebe's biopsychosocial approach but this time I'm looking at Ross's cognitive thinking. Specifically how Ross forms his judgment on the issue.

Ross and Phoebe Argue about Evolution

First Ross is overconfident. Overconfidence is a tendency to be more confident than correct or to overestimate the accuracy of our beliefs and judgments. With a topic like evolution, that people all have a strong feeling about either for or against, it's easy for someone to get overly emotional on their view.

Another thing is that Ross loses his belief perseverance in the following clip. Belief perseverance is clinging to one's initial conception after the basis on which they were formed has been discredited. Phoebe convinces Ross that science has been wrong in the past and that their is a chance they are wrong this time. She couldn't believe that she got him cave on his beliefs even the slightest.

Phoebe Gets Ross to Cave

Phoebe's Chicken Pox Sensation

Sensation is detecting stimulus from the environment. The main senses are vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch, motion, and balance. Touch is the first sense that is developed in the fetus and the last sense to leave us when we die. Touch is broken down into the feel of heat, cold, pressure, and pain.

Phoebe Gets Chicken Pox

In this scene from Friends Phoebe gets chicken pox for the first time and she passes it on to her friend. All they can think about is scratching the itchy spots. Phoebe's touch sensations are definitely in hyper drive. Especially the pain sensory.

Phoebe is also experiencing selective attention. Which means that her focus of conscious awareness a particular stimulus. The only stimulus that Phoebe can focus on is the itching and pain.

The pain circuit is when sensory receptors respond to potentially damaging stimuli by sending an impulse to the spinal cord, which passes the message to the brain, which interprets the signal as pain.

*Information obtained from lecture and the book.

How the "Friends" Characters Solve Problems

One important part of our cognitive thinking is how we choose to solve problems. In class we talked about four different types of thinking people use when problem solving.

  1. Algorithm- step-by-step procedures that guarantee a solution. It is usually the long way out, there are less errors which means their more likely to succeed, but it takes time.
  2. Heuristic- a simple thinking strategy that often allows us to make judgments and solve problems efficiently. Usually speedier, a short way, takes less time, but more error prone.
  3. Insight- a sudden and often novel realization of the solution to a problem, a new way of thinking.
  4. Intuition- a person's gut reaction.
Monica
  • Monica usually uses a algorithm approach to problem solving. She likes to think things through before she commits. Since she is a chef and is usually following a recipe, she follows a list of directions to solve problems as well, so that quality transfers over. Also, I does take her a lot of time to come to a decision. Monica likes to get looks of people's thoughts on ideas before she decides what to do. But in her relationships she tends to throw herself into love, for example when she went back to richard after they broke up, so this would be when she uses intuition and just follows her heart, without analyzing the problem.
Chandler
  • Chandler is a algorithm problem solver. His problem sometimes is that he over analyzes issues and doesn't always think rationally. Like Monica his job also influences his cognitive thinking. He works with numbers at his work and is supposed to be able to see the big picture and research effectively to reach the most accurate result.
Ross
  • Ross would like Monica use more of a algorithmic approach to problem solving. Which makes sense because they are brother and sister. He doesn't like to be wrong so he really thinks through things. He does have a lot of success because of it. He thinks of effective solutions to problems. He also uses trial and error to find out the best solution to his problem.
Rachel
  • Rachel is usually a heuristic problem solver. She likes to spend as little and time and energy on issues as she can. But issues that are really important to her she like to get everyones opinion on what they think she should do first but ultimately she relies on her intuition to make the final call.
Joey
  • Joey definitely just goes with his gut reaction on most things in his life, intuition. Most problems he doesn't think through at all, he just does something or he doesn't realize there is a problem is time to fix it. When Joey gets in a big pickle he usually uses heuristic cognitive thinking. He is definitely always looking for the short way that takes less time and effort on his part.
Phoebe
  • Phoebe is very unique in her cognitive thinking and can be difficult to predict. I would say that Phoebe likes to use new insight to solve problems. She has a very open mind and always thinks of new ridiculous ideas. In lecture we learned that this would mean that Phoebe has a right temporal lobe that has frequent in-flex activity.

*lecture notes and our text book were used to create the four types of problem solving definitions.

Nurture Contribution to Gender Identity

One is the biggest controversies in psychology is the nature vs. nurture issue which is over the relative contributions of biology and experience. I believe that gender identity is something that the environment usually shows children. An example is that people automatically associate pink with girls and boy with boys. Below is an example from Friends that shows parents trying to influence their children toward a certain gender stereotype.

Ross with G.I. Joe

In this clip from Friends, Ross is trying to get Ben to play with a G.I. Joe instead of playing with a barbie doll. Ben's moms, Susan and Carol, gave him a barbie to play with because he picked it out at the store and wanted it. Ross has a problem with that because he doesn't think boys should be playing with barbies. Ross tries to force Ben to play with G.I. Joe, he wants him interested in manly things.

Rachel and Phoebe don't think that Ben playing with a barbie doll is a big deal either, they think it is perfectly fine. Carol, Susan, and them give Ross a hard time for making a huge deal about it.

Piaget's Cognitive Development Theory with "Friends" Kids

Jean Piaget believed in the cognitive development theory which says that "Behavior is the result of the interaction between biological givens and environmental influences."

His developmental stages are as follows:
Sensorimotor Stage- Birth to 2
Pre-operational Stage- 2 to 7
Concrete Operations- 7 to 11
Formal Operations- 11 to 15

Ross and Rachel Raping "Baby Got Back" to Emma

Emma, Ross and Rachel's baby, would be in the sensorimotor stage of cognitive development in Piaget's theory. This means she is experiencing the world through senses and actions (looking, hearing, touching, mouthing, and grasping).

In the clip above, Ross and Rachel get Emma to laugh by singing the song "Baby Got Back" to her and by dancing to it as well. Piaget would say that laughing would be Emma's reflexive response to watching her parents sing and dance because babies have very little intention to their actions. Also, at Emma's age, babies have to rely on adults and the environment for stimulation. Ross and Rachel are giving Emma stimulation by dancing and singing, even though they aren't sure if it was the most appropriate song.

Ben Mimicking Rachel

In this clip from Friends Ben mimics what Rachel says as she is trying to get him to understand the consequences of playing pranks. Ben would be in the pre-operational stage of Piaget's cognitive development theory. During this stage kids represents things with words and images; using intuitive rather than logical reasoning.

In this stage Piaget would say that Ben doesn't understand cause and effect. So he doesn't understand that his actions have consequences. Also, Ben knows how to use language to communicate. But with not knowing cause and effect he doesn't know that mimicking is not an effective way to communicate and that it is frowned upon. Also, at his age he has difficulty understanding other people's point of view, so he doesn't know how his pranks make other people feel.

Psychosexual Development of Joey's Eating Habits

Joey's Eating Habits

Joey Eating Turkey

Joey Eats for Six

Sigmud Freud looked at "the approach to development that proposes a series of stages that children pass through in which pleasure, or gratification, is focused on a particular biological function and body part." He called this psychosexual development.

Freud believed that from Birth to 12-18 months, children are in the oral stage of psychosexual development. Which means the babies get oral gratification through sucking, eating, biting and mouthing.

Joey is known on friends for always eating. The clips above show some examples of his extreme eating habits. I believe that freud would say that Joey's oral needs were not met when he was a baby. So he eats so much food because he is trying to meet those needs.

Joey's Cerebrum Lobe Disfunction

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoR-C0vHBPw

These clips show Joey working on the an entertainment unit for Chandler and his apartment. Some challenges arise in the process and I will be looking at what part of the joey's brain, specifically the cerebrum lobes, was working through them. The big problem is that Joey made the entertainment unit to big for the space he had. Also, he wants to put new tile in for Monica but finds out it will be more difficult then he first thought.

  1. In Joey's frontal lobe his reasoning and problem solving abilities didn't fully comprehend what problems he could have had
    • Joey didn't think about the tile being glued and should have checked a tile in the corner of the bathroom and not from the center of the room.
    • He also, didn't think about the fact that it might be a bad idea to drill a hole in the wall before informing Chandler because Chandler was in his room and a foot away from where Joey was drilling.
  2. In Joey's parietal lobe is abstract thought is not as developed as Chandler would have like it to be.
    • Joey didn't mathematically calculate the dimensions on the wall for the entertainment unit. He made the unit too long so Joey should have measured the wall and figured out exactly how long each board needs to be but Joey just assumed the size of the space and the unit didn't fit.
  3. In Joey's temporal lobe a didn't consult his memory.
    • Joey should have thought about his past experiences and situations he has been through to realize that he usually doesn't think things through and because of that he finds himself in situations that are tricky to get out of. He should have known better then to assume things and should of actually gotten accurate information especially since he was working with power tools.
  4. In Joey's occipital lobe his receiving, interpreting, and discriminating of visual stimuli was not in check.
    • Looking at the space available on the wall for the entertainment unit Joey didn't interpret the amount of space correctly. He thought the wall was bigger than it really was.

Ross's Peripheral Nervous System

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBukCCXntzY&feature=related

In this clip Ross gets yelled at by Rachel's dad after he found out the Rachel was pregnant and Ross was the father. I'm going to look at how Ross's Peripheral Nervous System reacted to being yelled at.

The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is all the nerves outside of the central nervous system. So every nerve other than the ones in the brain and spinal cord. Examples are sensory receptors, muscles, and glands.

The PNS is composed of two components: the somatic nervous system, which enables voluntary control of skeletal system, and autonomic nervous system, which controls the glands and the muscles of the internal organs.

The autonomic nervous system serves two import functions: sympathetic nervous system, arouses and expends energy, and parasympathetic nervous system, calms the body and conserves its' energy.

Ross

  1. Somatic Nervous System-
      • When Ross gets hot he tugs at his collar.
      • Uses verbal movement as he tries to talk his way out of the situation by explaining his side of the story to Mona and Dr. Green.
      • Uses intense facial movements because he is panicking and is unsure about what to do.
      • Uses a lot of hand gestures because again he is panicking and that causes him to talk faster and use faster gestures.
  2. Autonomic Nervous System
    • Sympathetic Nervous System-
      • Accelerated heartbeat
      • Raised blood pressure
      • Cools body by sweating
    • Parasympathetic Nervous System-
      • Decreases heart rate
      • Lowers blood pressure
      • Ross's sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system work together to keep Ross's body at a steady internal state.

Ross & Phoebe Argue about Evolution

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXr2kF0zEgI

These series of clips show Ross and Phoebe arguing about the truth of evolution in the episode "The One Where Heckles Dies." Ross is a paleontologist, so he strongly believes in evolution and Phoebe definitely has her own free-spirited opinion on the creation of the world. I'm going to look at both Ross's and Phoebe's Biopsychosocial approach to the situation.

  • Biological Influences:
    • Ross
      • Ross as a male has a drive to have the upper hand so he continues to pursue Phoebe on the truth of evolution. Also, the idea that Phoebe doesn't believe in evolution makes it difficult for Ross to drop the subject. The idea drives him crazy, he can't get it out of his mind. It's one of the only things his brain can focus on.
    • Phoebe
      • Phoebe as a female doesn't like it when a man thinks he has to be right. Her brain is a lot less restricted than Ross's so she is able to consider multiple sides of an idea rather then just focus on one.
  • Psychological Influences:
    • Ross
      • Ross's reasoning behind his beliefs are formed by hard facts. He believes in ideas that have been tested or proven and that are usually the popular opinion. Evolution is  associated with his occupation so he feels even stronger about his opinion and he doesn't accept other ideas.
    • Phoebe
      • Phoebe's reasoning behind her beliefs are formed from her experiences and thoughts. She questions facts and comes up with her own theories for issues and she doesn't believe everything she hears. Phoebe knows that her opinion might not be the popular idea but she doesn't conform to others.
  • Social- Cultural Influences:
    • Ross
      • Ross debates Phoebe on the subject of evolution because she challenges him in front of their friends. Since evolution has to do with his career he feels he needs to win the argument so he doesn't seem weak to his friends. Ross also feels that as a scientist he needs to get Phoebe on his side and as a scientist it would be embarrassing not to be able to convince someone of the truth behind evolution.
    • Phoebe
      • Phoebe believes that people should be able to have their own theory on things and shouldn't have to conform so she challenges Ross because he is so determined to be right and won't give up. Phoebe never had any expectations growing up because she was on her own, so the presence of her peers doesn't stop her from being herself and saying what's on her mind.
